Dr Ashwani Kumar is one of India’s most experienced psychiatrists, with over 40 years of dedicated service in the field of mental health, psychiatry, addiction medicine, and psychosocial rehabilitation. Throughout his distinguished career, he has helped thousands of individuals and families overcome mental health challenges through compassionate, evidence-based, and patient-centered care.
As a Visiting Consultant at VataVriksh Parent Care, Dr Kumar provides expert guidance in the assessment, treatment, and management of mental health conditions affecting elderly parents (seniors), including depression, anxiety, dementia-related behavioural concerns, adjustment difficulties, sleep disturbances, and emotional well-being. Professional Experience & Achievements
Dr Kumar completed his MD in Psychiatry from Government Medical College, Patiala, in 1986. Over the last four decades, he has built an exceptional career spanning clinical practice, psychiatric rehabilitation, addiction treatment, community mental health, and academic contributions.
Currently, he serves as Principal Consultant – Psychiatry at Max Hospital, Gurugram. Since 2018, he has also been associated as a Visiting Consultant Psychiatrist at Paras Hospital, Gurugram, and runs a psychiatric outpatient clinic at South Point Mall, Gurugram. Prior to this, he successfully managed and operated a dedicated in-patient psychiatric treatment facility in West Delhi for nearly three decades, from 1991 to 2018.
Dr Kumar is a respected member of several professional bodies, including the Indian Psychiatric Society, Indian Biological Psychiatry Society, Indian Association of Private Psychiatry, and the Association of Industrial Psychiatry of India.
Recognition & Contributions
Dr Kumar has received national and international recognition for his contributions to mental health and addiction treatment. He was awarded the prestigious Navjyoti National Award for Outstanding Work in the Field of Drug De-addiction and Rehabilitation. He has represented India in international programs on narcotic prevention and addiction rehabilitation and has participated in professional exchange programs in the United Kingdom and the United States.
His academic contributions include research presentations and publications on suicide prevention, psychiatric disorders, addiction treatment, and mental health interventions, reflecting his longstanding commitment to advancing psychiatric care and public awareness.
