A Dementia Care Success Story
A safe environment, timely care, and the right emotional support can truly change lives. At VataVriksh Parent Care, we witness such transformations often, but some stories leave a lasting impact. This is one such inspiring success story of an 85-year-old resident whose journey beautifully reflects the power of holistic elderly care.
The Beginning – A Challenging Phase
About a year ago, an 85-year-old lady began attending VataVriksh Parent Care as part of our day care program. A detailed cognitive function assessment conducted at the center revealed moderate level of dementia. She was experiencing memory lapses, reduced orientation, and limited social interaction – concerns that were deeply worrying for her family.
Planned Intervention and Structured Care
Based on her assessment, our multidisciplinary team led by Dr Subodh Kumar (Cognitive Psychologist) designed a personalized intervention plan. Structured cognitive stimulation, functional activities, social engagement, and regular monitoring were initiated in a supportive day care environment. Cognitive assessments were repeated every 15 days to one month to track progress.
Over time, the results were encouraging. Her cognitive scores steadily improved, indicating that the progression of dementia had slowed and recovery had begun. Within two to three months, she started interacting with others, participating in group activities, and regained orientation to day, date, place, and daily routines. Her independence in daily activities improved significantly.
A New Sense of Belonging
After six months of consistent day care attendance, both the lady and her daughter – her primary caregiver – noticed a remarkable change. She was happier, more confident, and emotionally secure at the center. Together, they decided that shifting her to full-time residential (in-house) living at VataVriksh would further enhance her wellbeing.
The transition proved to be life-changing. Living at the center 24-7, she found a warm, family-like environment and a community of peers of her own age. She actively participated in daily activities, enjoyed social interactions, and often expressed that VataVriksh felt like her true home. “This is my family now,” she would say with a smile.
Timely Medical Care That Saved a Life
About a month after shifting to residential care, she suddenly became critically ill. Thanks to the 24-7 medical availability at VataVriksh, Dr Ramesh Goyal, Chairman of the facility, immediately recognized the severity of her condition and arranged for urgent hospitalization. She was placed on ventilator support due to multi-organ failure and remained critical for nearly 10 days.
With timely medical intervention, continuous monitoring, and emotional support, she gradually recovered – moving from the ventilator to the ICU, then to the ward, and eventually being discharged. Her family later acknowledged that this quick decision and timely hospitalization saved her life and would not have been possible without round-the-clock medical supervision at the center.
“We owe you our sincere gratitude and mother’s life.” – Dr. Meenakshi
“Sir, my biggest gratitude to you. If it was not for you and your timely efforts, we would have lost our mother. Thank you 😊 always for keeping and looking after her as your own mom. 🙏🏻” – Adv. Kiran Ashri
Recovery, Happiness, and a Renewed Life
Following discharge, she continued her recovery under medical guidance, including support from another daughter who is a medical doctor based in the USA. The positive environment, quality care, and emotional security she experienced played a crucial role in her complete recovery.
Today, more than one and a half years later, she is living happily at VataVriksh Parent Care. Her quality of life continues to improve day by day. She remains socially active, emotionally content, and her cognitive abilities are intact across all domains. Most importantly, she feels safe, valued, and at home.
A Story of Hope
This success story is a powerful reminder that dementia is not just about decline – with early intervention, structured cognitive engagement, compassionate caregiving, and timely medical support, seniors can rediscover joy, dignity, and purpose in life.
