Understanding Dementia Beyond Textbooks: My Internship at VataVriksh Parent Care

An internship at VataVriksh Parent Care offers far more than just practical credits—it completely reshapes your perspective on clinical psychology.

Before starting my training, my knowledge of elderly care, dementia, and age-related memory loss was largely confined to textbooks and academic theories. However, hands-on experience in a real memory care environment completely transformed how I view cognitive conditions.

This journey taught me that the true essence of psychology isn’t just about diagnosing a problem; it is about deeply connecting with another human being and providing emotional comfort.

1. Redefining Communication in Dementia Care

When I first began interacting with elderly residents living with dementia, I mistakenly assumed that meaningful communication would be nearly impossible due to their memory gaps. I quickly learned how wrong I was.

Dementia care taught me that communication goes far beyond a simple exchange of information. Even when words fail, emotional connection thrives.

💡 Key Insight: Individuals with memory loss may forget specific details, but they never forget how you make them feel. They respond instinctively to warmth, kindness, attention, and familiarity.

2. The Healing Power of Music and Reminiscence

One of the most remarkable highlights of my VataVriksh Parent Care internship was witnessing the profound emotional impact of music therapy.

Whenever vintage music was played in the facility, the transformation in the room was palpable:

  • Residents who were otherwise quiet began to smile and hum along.
  • Forgotten memories and long-lost emotions suddenly resurfaced.
  • A sense of calm and joy swept through the living space.

This eye-opening experience made me realize that dementia does not erase a person’s inner world. Music acts as a bridge, unlocking a completely different level of emotional attachment and cognitive stimulation that text-only therapies cannot replicate.

3. Invaluable Lessons from Compassionate Caregivers

Observing the professional caregivers at the facility was a masterclass in patience and empathy. Specialized memory care requires a unique set of skills that goes far beyond managing basic physical needs. It demands:

  • Peace and Consistency: Staying grounded and predictable for residents.
  • Calm Reassurance: Gently repeating information to soothe confusion without causing frustration.
  • Dignified Encouragement: Inviting residents to participate in daily activities without making them feel pressured or incompetent.

Watching the staff navigate these daily emotional challenges taught me the true meaning of clinical dedication and unconditional positive regard.

4. The Critical Role of Daily Engagement

Isolation is one of the biggest challenges faced by older adults. At VataVriksh Parent Care, I saw firsthand how a structured schedule of daily activities acts as a powerful therapeutic tool.

Whether it was through storytelling, group games, musical sessions, or simple group conversations, active engagement helps eliminate loneliness. These interactive sessions are vital for preserving cognitive health and maintaining social connections among residents.

5. Personal and Professional Growth

This internship has been a turning point in my journey as a future psychologist. It bridged the massive gap between learning abstract psychological theories and understanding the lived reality of families affected by Alzheimer’s and dementia.

It reminded me that elderly care requires immense patience, deep respect, and unwavering kindness. Even when a person is confused about their own memories and identity, their need to feel appreciated, valued, and loved remains completely unchanged.
