Bridging Theory and Empathy: My Journey in Elder Care at VataVriksh Parent Care

My experience at VataVriksh Parent Care has been deeply enriching and pivotal for my journey as a psychology student. Working in an environment entirely dedicated to the care and dignity of older adults has been an enlightening experience. It allowed me to step beyond the confines of textbooks and truly grasp the emotional realities, sensitivities, and complexities of growing older.

During my time here, I gained profound insights into the lives of elder individuals, particularly those navigating the challenges of Parkinson’s disease, dementia, and various age-related health conditions.

Beyond Clinical Care: Understanding Dignity and Emotion

One of the most impactful aspects of my internship was observing the daily routines and interactions of the residents. This firsthand exposure helped me realize that elder care extends far beyond physical health and medical well-being; it is fundamentally about preserving dignity, honoring emotions, and providing comfort and a sense of familiarity. I learned a great deal about how older adults perceive time, navigate memories, cope with confusion, and experience dependency.

From Textbooks to Practice: Cognitive Assessments

As part of my practical training, I had the opportunity to conduct the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) with a few residents. This gave me invaluable, hands-on exposure to clinical cognitive assessment. It was incredible to see how psychological tools are applied in real-world care settings to evaluate memory, orientation, attention, and overall cognitive functioning, bridging the gap between academic theory and compassionate, responsible practice.

Research and Advocacy: Amplifying Awareness

Another fulfilling dimension of my role was conducting research and writing blogs for VataVriksh Parent Care. Delving into the crucial issues surrounding geriatric care and mental health awareness helped refine my research and communication skills. More importantly, it taught me how psychology can be used as a tool for public education—sensitizing the community and spreading awareness about the unique needs of the elderly.

Engagement and Connection: Enhancing Quality of Life

I also actively participated in designing and implementing activities meant to keep the seniors engaged, active, and socially connected. Interacting with the residents during these sessions underscored the vital importance of mental stimulation and emotional presence. I realized how crucial it is to provide a dedicated space where older adults feel genuinely seen, heard, and included.

Mentorship and Professional Growth

What made this experience truly transformative was the mentorship of Dr. Subodh Kumar, Project Director & Psychologist at VataVriksh Parent Care. His guidance added immense depth and sensitivity to my learning. Under his supervision, I learned how to apply psychological frameworks to handle cognitive decline, emotional disturbances, and behavioral changes in real-time. His structured and reflective approach greatly enriched my professional development.

The Power of a Multidisciplinary Approach

VataVriksh Parent Care is a specialized center providing comprehensive, personalized senior care. Experiencing their wide spectrum of services—including memory care, assisted living, day care, respite care, palliative care, and post-operative or stroke rehabilitation—helped me appreciate the necessity of a multidisciplinary approach to geriatric health.

Conclusion: A Lesson in Human Connection

Ultimately, my time at VataVriksh Parent Care did more than just expand my academic knowledge; it fundamentally reshaped my perspective. I walk away with a profound appreciation for empathy, patience, keen observation, and mindful communication. This was far more than a conventional educational internship—it was a powerful reminder of how psychology can be used to understand the human experience and deliver truly compassionate care.
